Welcome to Richard Ramsden Page

Richard Ramsden

Richard Ramsden commenced Year 7 at Trinity Grammar School, Kew, in 1991. His three older brothers had also attended TGS. James finished in 1985, Duncan in 1988 and Andrew in 1991. Encouraged by his family to participate in as many activities as possible, Richard took up piano lessons but his greatest abilities became apparent when he made the school athletics team.

Concentrating on middle distance, he led the under 13 team in the 800 metre and 1500 metre events under the coaching of Brett Hayes, a professional runner himself. Four weeks prior to AGSV Athletics Day in May 1991, Richard broke the school record for the 1500 metres by 6 seconds, setting a time of 4 minutes 54 seconds. This would remain to be the record for over a decade. That same year, he narrowly missed the 800 metre record and as the years passed, he grew further away from beating any other yearly records. A rivalry also grew between the competitive Ivanhoe Athletics Team and the TGS team.

In 1995, when Richard was in Year 11, the TGS Athletics team eventually took the AGSV Athletics Championship. That year, Richard ran the 1500 metre and 3000 metre events. His final year at school saw him become the Vice Captain of the team and House Captain of Athletics.

Academically, Richard excelled mostly in Mathematics and Science although in his final year of VCE his English grade of A+ was among his highest. In previous years, Folio Art was a favourite but as careers beckoned this was dropped in favour of more science studies. Richard was also awarded the school prize for Geography in 1995, a year 12 subject he had undertaken while still in year 11.

Other extracurricular activities include being a School camp leader in 1993 -1994 at the Leppit Outdoor Centre, Lake Eppalock in Victoria. This is a coveted leadership program taken seriously by the school and includes comprehensive first aid, sailing and navigational training. Richard also participated in mentoring Junior School children while in year 7, and when in middle school completed his Duke of Edinburgh medallion.

After completing his final year 12 exams, Richard had the option to study Law, Commerce or Science at Melbourne University, and eventually settled for a combined degree of Commerce/ Science.
